Just mention the four-letter word A-C-N-E and those struggling with acne skin condition will tell you that the journey is never easy. Acne is one of the most challenging skin conditions to treat – mainly because the factors that affect it are so broad and many.
For example, someone suffering from acne (or pimples) may wonder:
- Was my acne or pimples due to the bag of peanuts I ate?
- Was it because I missed cleansing my face twice in a row?
- Can I blame it on my menses that are around the corner? (only for the ladies!)
- Lack of sleep since the year 2014?
- Or excessive stress or late nights
And the list goes on!
What if we told you that we have some solid facts on WHY acne happens, and these facts have been PROVEN by SCIENCE based on a ton of research. Knowing some of these facts will help you better understand your skin and how to achieve a clear blemish-free complexion!
Want to know more? Read on!
In the late 90’s, skincare companies around the world marketed acne-prone skincare products with the message that it was “oil-free”, giving the consumer the perception that “oil” was not necessarily good for the skin.
However, the very fact remains that our skin is essentially made out of lipids, or oils. In order for it to function well, the skin needs oils in the right amount to achieve balance. Any imbalance of oil levels in our skin is the cause of acne breakouts and blemishes.
Before we go any further, there is a term called linoleic acid that needs to be familiarized and understood for us to understand the acne condition. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid and is one of two essential (or a MUST) fatty acids for humans. Linoleic acid cannot be produced by the skin. It has to be obtained through diet.
Now, a lot of us know that too much oil (or sebum) in the skin causes acne breakouts or pimples.
BUT here’s the thing: Not many people are aware that too much sebum/oil in the skin is caused by the low level of linoleic acid in the body (this means low levels of linoleic acid in your body is causing you an excessive crazy oil situation, leading to pimples and acne outbreaks)!
Now that you know this very basic truth, one of the ways to regulate our linoleic acid levels in our body is by increasing the number of foods that are high in linoleic acid (so start snacking on grains rich in Omega-6 fatty acids such as sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, grape seeds, walnuts, pistachio nuts, evening primrose oil, for examples!) to balance back the skin’s level of linoleic acid.
Alternatively, we can choose to apply skincare rich in linoleic acid (or omega 6 oils, like grape seed oil, rosehip seed oil directly onto the skin where it can be benefitted most to reduce acne)
So, guys, it’s not about avoiding products that are oil-based if you have acne or pimple prone skin. Rather, you’ll need to be discerning to know what type of oils you’re applying that can help or hurt your skin condition. If it’s oiled rich in linoleic acid, then you’ll be sure your skin will benefit from it!
Keep in mind that natural products tend to work best (harmful chemicals can cause skin sensitivity and aggravate acne!).
Also, choosing products that have been dermatologically tested helps to ensure the product minimizing side effects.
